Who Created Rust? The Story Behind the Survival Hit

News

Rust is one of the most iconic survival games ever made. But who exactly created it? Here's the full breakdown — from the mind behind Garry’s Mod to the global Rust phenomenon.

The Creator: Garry Newman

Rust was developed by Garry Newman, a British programmer best known for creating Garry’s Mod, the chaotic sandbox on Source Engine. After its success, Garry founded Facepunch Studios in 2009 to work on original titles.

Where the Idea Came From

In 2013, Garry began working on a survival game inspired by DayZ and Minecraft. It started as a Unity-based mod for Garry’s Mod but quickly evolved into a standalone project.

Rust’s core concept was brutal: you wake up naked in a harsh open world with only a rock, and everything wants you dead — hunger, cold, radiation… and other players.

Early Access and Rise

Rust launched in early alpha in December 2013. It was raw, glitchy, and incredibly addictive.

By March 2014, Rust had sold over 150,000 copies, and Facepunch moved to a new engine based on Unity 5 to rebuild everything from scratch.

Facepunch Studios Today

Based in the UK, Facepunch Studios is still indie — a small team of ~30 people — but manages one of the most active multiplayer games on Steam.

They're also working on S&Box, a sandbox platform built on Source 2. But Rust remains their flagship.
